The Science Behind Jing Luo (Meridian): Understanding The Body’s Energy Pathways

What is Jing Luo?

Jing Luo, commonly translated as meridians, is a concept in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) describing the network of pathways through which vital energy, or Qi, and blood circulate in the body. Jing Luo are channels that connect various parts of the body, including organs, tissues and joints, linking together these aspects into one network of energetic communication. In our body, there are 12 primary Jing Luo, each associated with a specific organ system (Zang Fu) and named after the corresponding organ.

Understanding The Synergy Between Jing Luo and Zang Fu

In TCM, the concept of Zang Fu refers to the organs and viscera in the human body. These organs are categorised into two groups, namely Zang and Fu, which are also aligned to yin and yang energies respectively. Together, they work in harmony as an interconnected unit to maintain the balance of Qi, blood and body fluids in the body. Here is a closer look at them:

Zang (Yin) Organs: Vital for storing essential substances such as Qi, blood and body fluids

  • Heart (Xin):
Responsible for housing the mind and controlling blood circulation
  • Liver (Gan):
Stores blood, regulates Qi, and is associated with smooth emotional wellbeing
  • Spleen (Pi):
Governs digestion and transformation of food into Qi and blood.
  • Lungs (Fei):
Controls respiration and aids in distributing Qi and fluids.
  • Kidneys (Shen):
Regulates water metabolism and is linked with reproductive health.

Fu (Yang) Organs: Responsible for receiving and digesting food, and transmitting waste out of the body.

  • Small Intestine (Xiao Chang):
Separates clear and turbid fluids and facilitates absorption of nutrients.
  • Large Intestine (Da Chang):
Receives waste from the small intestine and forms faeces for elimination.
  • Gallbladder (Dan):
Stores bile and is involved in decision-making and courage.
  • Stomach (Wei):
Receives and digests food, separating pure from impure.
  • Urinary Bladder (Pangguang):
    Stores and excretes urine.
  • Triple Burner (San Jiao):
Coordinates functions of the upper, middle and lower burners (regions of the body).

The synergy between Jing Luo and Zang Fu is a vital component of health in TCM philosophy, reflecting the interconnectedness of various physiological processes in the body. With proper maintenance of the Jing Luo meridians, circulation of Qi and blood throughout the body remains smooth, which is an unseen but essential factor in ensuring overall well-being.
